Shut off the main
Usually where the water line enters the house, in the basement or crawlspace. Turn the handle clockwise or the lever across the pipe.

Kill power near water
If water is reaching outlets, appliances or the panel, switch off that circuit at the breaker. Don't stand in water to do it.

Open a low faucet
Draining the lines through a basement or outside spigot takes pressure off the leak.

Smell gas? Get out
Leave the house, then call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Don't flip switches on the way.
